VOA News The eastern German city of Leipzig saw violent clashes between left-wing protesters and police, June 3, 2023.
The call for protests came in reaction to a May 31 court ruling in which an alleged left-wing extremist was sentenced to more than five years of prison. The accused, Lina E., faced charges of vigilante violence against right-wing extremists and being part of a criminal organization.
In response, antifa and other left-wing groups called for a “Day X” and announced an escalation of damage to public objects and offices, prompting the police to revoke the right to demonstrate in Leipzig, the city of residence of Lina E.
Permission for a public gathering, however, was approved.
According to police spokesman Olaf Hoppe, the police tried to negotiate with the organizers of the gathering when protesters started to gather stones and covered their faces. In a statement on Twitter, Hoppe said, an escalation of the situation started with protesters “massively attacking” the police. #Germany #Protest #Wedding #reels #videography #voanews
