Michael Cohen finished answering questions from prosecutors about his role in making hush-money payments to women before the 2016 election, setting up what is likely to be a contentious cross-examination this afternoon by the former president’s lawyers.
During testimony that began first thing Monday morning, Cohen directly tied Trump to a scheme to quash negative tabloid stories about the former president’s conduct with women before the election. Crucially, Cohen told the Manhattan jury that Trump was deeply involved in deals to pay adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal for their silence, and that he knew their stories posed a major threat to his campaign.
Trump’s former lawyer and fixer also gave damning testimony about how Trump reimbursed him for personally making the $130,000 payment to Daniels. While Trump claimed in business records that the repayment was for legal services Cohen provided under a retainer, Cohen said he didn’t do any legal work at that time. He also testified about his bitter break with Trump after Cohen was investigated by federal prosecutors, which led Cohen’s guilty plea on tax and other crimes.
