In 1954, Pontiac introduced the new, longer-wheelbase Star Chief as its top-of-the-line model, in addition to the Chieftain, which was the brand's sole model for several years. Like the smaller Chieftain, the Star Chief featured a bulky pontoon body based on the GM A platform, with molded rear fenders and a hood that had a pointed configuration reminiscent of an alligator hood. The length was achieved by lengthening the frame at the rear of the Chieftain by around 280 mm (11 inches) past the rear axle and adding longer rear panels. A new design feature of the model year was a full-length javelin running down the rear fender and enclosing the wheel covers up to the rear bumper.

Also in 1954, brake boosters, electric windows (only for the front doors) and air conditioning were offered as optional extras for the first time. The 1954 Pontiacs are the first production vehicles in the United States to have air conditioning in the modern sense with integrated controls. A far more responsive and fully adjustable front seat has also been added. The rear loudspeakers of the tube radio and an electrically extendable telescopic antenna were also new. Possible extra equipment included e.g. a power steering ($134) and a windshield washer.

There were two trim levels from the Star Chief. The Star Chief Deluxe was available as a 2-door convertible and a 4-door sedan, while the better equipped Star Chief Custom was available as a 2-door hardtop coupe that lacked the B-pillar, or as a 4-door sedan. The hardtop model also carried the additional designation Catalina. The custom and deluxe models each had six seats.

Unlike the Chieftain, the Star Chief was only available with an in-line 8-cylinder engine, which had a displacement of 4398 cm3 (268.4 in3) and had an output of 122 bhp (gross SAE-HP) (90 kW) with a manual gearbox and 127 bhp (93 kW) at 3800 rpm with the Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Another visual difference to the Chieftain were the five instead of three "Silver Streaks" chrome struts on the hood and the rear fender covers of the wheel arches. The Star Chief models cost around $200 more than comparable Chieftains. 115,088 vehicles were built in the model year, of which only 571 had the manual transmission.
