In every country, the black soft drink we all know is the dominant soft drink - not so in Scotland, where the brand competes with the Scottish national drink "Irn Bru", which was first produced around 1900. At that time, the premise was to provide construction workers with inexpensive refreshment during a long working day. The traditional lemonade is made from so-called iron girders. Whether this is actually true or simply an allusion to the historical past is not 100% known.
In 2019, the Scottish government introduced a sugar tax. From then on, all drinks above a certain sugar content had to be taxed, which naturally had an impact on production costs. To counteract this problem, Irn Bru producer "Barr" decided to reduce the sugar content in Irn Bru and replace most of it with sweetener. The new variety replaced the original. However, after a huge outcry from the public, the company backtracked and reintroduced the old version with the increased sugar content.
