Most people, including Christians, don’t comprehend how powerful, and also how destructive the words of their mouths can be. Most of us have felt the sting of harsh words or the healing touch of kind ones. Our words have the power to encourage, edify, teach, instruct, and help. They also have the power to complain, criticize, gossip, and speak negatively about others.
King David, a man after God’s own heart, prayed, “Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). He understood the gravity of his words and sought divine assistance to guard them.
In Psalm 15, we are asked, “LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?” The answer is clear: those who speak the truth in their hearts, who do not slander with their tongues, nor do evil to their neighbors, nor take up a reproach against them (Psalm 15:1-3).
Today we’re learning some of God’s wisdom on how to use our words rightly, especially in times of conflicts!
