In Ronald Reagan's final interview as president, he discusses his support for an independent citizen's redistricting commission to draw legislative and congressional lines.
Reagan had strong objections to the use of gerrymandering. In the interview he says, “rather than leaving it to the politics of whichever party controls a state’s legislature, each state should have an independent nonpartisan commission whose sole responsibility is redistricting based on census results.”
Gerrymandering is the redrawing of district boundaries to benefit one political party over another.
Reagan was interviewed by David Brinkley at the White House in January, 1989.
