Friends of Charles Schulz continue skating tradition

Anyone who has followed the comic strip “Peanuts” in the papers knows that the seasons of the year are always represented in Charles M. Schulz’s comic classic strip. Schulz moved from Minnesota to California in 1958, leaving winter, snow and ice behind him. But as Schulz became famous and wealthy, particularly after the animated TV specials started airing on TV in the Sixties, he had wintertime built for him. Every Tuesday evening in Santa Rosa, long-time friends of Charles Schulz, creator of Charley Brown and Snoopy, meet up at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, better known as “Snoopy’s Home Ice.” “Everyone touched by him in some way,” says Phil LeBrun, age 67. Charles Schulz, originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, missed the ice. But with the explosive success of “Peanuts” in the Sixties, built a full-sized skating rink—with his own money—opening it in 1969 to the public for everyone to enjoy.
