Elon Musk SURPRISES The EV Industry With This New Electric Motor!
Tesla is making a significant attempt to get rid of rare earth minerals from its electric vehicles, possibly eradicating the main environmental problem associated with the growing number of EVs on the road. But, how will Tesla make this happen? Let’s find out!

According to IDTechEx, who examines the various types of electric motors used in EVs as well as emerging alternatives like axial flux and in-wheel motors in its report Electric Motors for Electric Vehicles 2022–2032, given Tesla's significant market share in the EV industry, this could prove to be a significant transition for the design and sustainability of electric motors.
In China, Europe, and the US, the EV market for automobiles, buses, trucks, vans, and two-wheelers is examined in the report.
Using an induction motor, which uses a copper or aluminum cage on the rotor (the revolving section of the motor), Tesla's early vehicles, including the original Model S and X, are explained in the study.
With the introduction of the Model 3 in 2017, the use of a permanent magnet (PM) motor was implemented. With a PM motor, a magnetic field is created on the rotor using powerful magnets.
The transition to a PM design allowed for higher efficiency and power density, IDTechEx continues, even though Tesla kept an induction motor for its secondary drive unit (which provides boosts of acceleration as needed).
According to IDTechEx analysis, PM motors will account for more than 80% of the EV motor industry in 2022.
The materials needed to create the magnets, namely rare earths, are a drawback of PM motors.
Materials in this category, according to IDTechEx, include neodymium and dysprosium, which are expensive and have a limited supply chain due to geography.
The majority of output in the globe comes from China, which traditionally has caused price instability. When China prohibited rare earth exports in 2011, prices for neodymium and dysprosium rose by almost 750% and 2000%, respectively.
Prices began to increase once more at the end of 2020, with the average price in 2022 being about 2.6 times higher than in 2017.
Environmental issues are present in addition to price issues. Acidification of the groundwater and nearby soil can result from the wastewater produced by rare earth mining. Another possible by-product of rare earth mining is radioactive and heavy metal waste.
Induction motors were chosen by some manufacturers, such as Audi and Mercedes, in order to allay PM worries, while BMW and Renault chose a wound rotor layout.
According to IDTechEx, these designs are often heavier and less efficient overall, but significant effort has been made to minimize these drawbacks.
Although Tesla has stated that its new motor would not contain any rare earths, it is still a PM motor, which is significant. "Rare earth content, particularly heavy rare earths, has been steadily decreased by some manufacturers, including Tesla. Alternative magnetic materials, such as magnets based on ferrite or other alloys, are needed to be rare earth-free. These often have a significantly weaker magnetic field, resulting in a motor that is less power-dense.
