As we grow older and hopefully wiser, we should have a more honest opinion of ourselves and our inability to measure up to God's standards. As younger versions of ourselves we may have had more confidence in ourselves. Upon honest reflection, we should come to a place of humility and receive more grace from God and be more gracious to others.
I believe David comes to that place in this Psalm.
