1. TBYS assertion that body positivity should exclude fat people, and be reserved for those with "circumstances out of their control," ignores that fatness is, for many people, out of their control. Sure, personal choice is important for health, but fatness is most often closely tied to countless factors outside of personal choice; Namely, genetics (see Jeff Nippard's "Is Obesity a Choice?") and also, the industrial and governmental factors that have pushed people towards the consumption of processed foods for about 70 years
2. When I played devils advocate to TBYS "fat acceptance" point, I failed to adequately dispel of the notion that being fat inherently means that you are unhealthy. Fat people can be healthy, and the broad correlation between obesity and health problems does not imply causation for every person. In the short film, Cynthia is clearly athletic, capable, and not portrayed to have any health problems. So assuming that there are some underlying health issues just because she's fat is an ungrounded reading of the text (one that is based on, yes, fatphobia). This is the sort of thinking contributes to medical fatphobia (which I've talked about on the channel before, see "Fatphobic Comedy is the Worst") where a patient might have their health concerns dismissed with "just lose weight!" when the issues actually originate from other factors. I had a whole section written out about this (around 2 pages) but decided to remove it for brevity, so I appreciate that it was brought up by a few of you.
3. I could've spent a little more time breaking down the elements of rainbow capitalism from this Dove campaign. Like, yes, I think this push towards representation is important and necessary (especially considering the statistics from the Opinium survey) but focusing solely on this misses out on the broader implications of linking social justice rhetoric with marketing, for profit. By not criticizing Dove, I gave them free promo here, and I didn't even get a bag for it (socialism is when no sponsor) and that's pretty cringe
4. I think I might've misinterpreted TBYS first argument about sexualization. He's not saying that Cynthia is being sexualized, he's pointing out a perceived hipocracy on Dove's part; Since he assumes that the Lara article defines sexualization as "showing skin," then this would mean Cynthia removing her armor would be Dove sexualizing her. His assumption is false, though, because as I went into, sexualization encompasses more than just showing skin. In Lara's case, the article is pointing out that sexualization comes in her unrealistic body proportions - Which, funnily enough, maps almost perfectly onto the example of the Cynthia animation; Her sexualization comes from the way her armor squeezes her figure into the ideal male gamer gaze shape, despite her body being closer to that of the average women.
