Polar ice melting at “critical” levels, politicians must decarbonize economy: European Space Agency

Global News The melting of polar icecaps and glaciers is a “very critical” situation, European Space Agency (ESA) chief Josef Aschbacher said Friday, calling for world leaders to “recognize the importance of” and act upon climate change.
Aschbacher noted the impact polar ice melting is having on the rise of sea levels — something that has contributed to many of the devastating and fatal storms that have swept various continents in 2023.
Global temperatures are now more likely than not to breach 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming within the next five years, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) revealed in May.
Emphasizing the ESA’s role in fighting climate change too, Aschbacher said that “one quarter of our budget is dedicated to Earth observation, which is mostly focusing on climate activities. And yes, we fully support these initiatives with the means we have at our disposal."
