22 Aug: STUNNING GAIN! Ukrainians SEIZE 43 square kilometers on Southern Flank Around Bakhmut
Ukrainian forces are struggling today to break through formidable Russian defense lines on these fronts, particularly in the southern Zaporizhia region and eastern Donetsk region, as their two-month-long counteroffensive continues.
In the last hours of the day, bombshell news started coming from both Zaporizhia and Donetsk front lines.
But the most important moment of today's agenda took place in the Donetsk region.
Ukrainians have achieved historic successes in the Donetsk region. The strategic center of the Ukrainian troops' successes was Bakhmut and the settlements around this city.
Here is the full impact of the ingenious tactics of the Ukrainian forces that destroyed the stronghold of the war and its surroundings.
Today, the Ukrainian army shared stunning footage of its fighters targeting a Russian tank convoy near the Donetsk city of Bakhmut as it continues its offensive against Russian troops positioned in the south and east of the country.
In the clip, released by the Ukrainian government and attributed to Ukraine's 24th Aidar Assault Battalion, a convoy of Russian military vehicles moves through the countryside while being tracked by a Ukrainian drone.
In a wider shot, clouds of smoke can be seen as Russian tanks are targeted by strikes, before the footage shows the burning wreckage of military vehicles.
These successful attacks by Ukrainian forces on the Russian convoy were a mind-boggling attempt to unlock the front lines in and near Bakhmut.
Geolocated images have emerged showing decisive Ukrainian advances west of Yahidne, a village just northwest of Bakhmut.
It also showed fierce clashes between both sides of the war in the central part of Klishchiivka.
In the settlement of Andriivka, south of this town, we can see intense Ukrainian pressure.
The Ukrainians are even deploying new troops in areas as far south as Kurdiumivka, south of Andriivka.
All these Ukrainian efforts on the fronts of the Donetsk region finally began to bear fruit today, with Kiev officials announcing the latest successes of its army on the flanks of Bakhmut.
In her latest post, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar reported that Moscow troops are trying to retake positions north of Bakhmut, but clashes continue south of the city.
Maliar added that today Ukrainian fighters recaptured an additional three square kilometers around the southern flank of Bakhmut.
Overall, with these gains, the Ukrainians have liberated 43 square kilometers near Bakhmut.
Russia, on the other hand, is trying to push Ukrainian forces, who have seized the dominant heights around Bakhmut, from the northern flanks of the city, but Putin's forces have so far been unsuccessful in this regard.
In fact, Russian troops have been trapped here for the last few weeks, unable to break out of Bakhmut and make full-fledged advances.
So the Russians had already lost the initiative in this area to Ukraine. Kiev, on the other hand, has been organizing offensive plans around Bakhmut and this city, which resembles a cat-and-mouse game.
At the moment, Russian troops are helpless on the central front lines of Bakhmut, unable to stop the Ukrainian advance on the flanks of the city and unable to support the clashes.
However, Russian troops on the eastern Ukrainian front lines continue their desperate offensive efforts to distract attention.
Today, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia launched unsuccessful attacks near Kurdiumivka, about 20 kilometers south of Bakhmut and Synkivka, about 15 kilometers from Kupiansk, Kharkiv Oblast.
For its part, the Ukrainian military announced that it continued to halt Russian advances near Marinka and conducted offensive actions in Zaporizhzhia Oblast against occupied Melitopol and Berdiansk.
The violence of the clashes in the Velyka Novosilka region of Ukraine seems to have calmed down somewhat with the liberation of Urozhaine and Ukrainian advances in Robotyne.
