Satan, Hell, and moving on to Love (Jn 14:30-31; John study 111)

Jesus transitions from his statements about Satan (ruler of the world, having no hold over him) to how Satan's actions will direct the world into knowing the love of Christ. The love of Christ is made known through the cross, and Satan has no hold over Jesus there. When Satan possessed Judas to arrest Jesus, Jesus could have resisted but went willingly. Jesus also gave up his own spirit, not being overcome by his enemies. Death (brought about through the devil's deception in Eden) could not hold him and Jesus rose again. Even though Satan tries to overcome Jesus, Jesus uses everything that happens to demonstrate his love.
We talk a fair bit about the punishment of God, especially what this means for hell. Hell itself is God's judgement--the fire of God. God and His presence is described with fire. His purification is symbolized by fire. And God's punishment with His condemnation is the Lake of Fire. This is His justice and only a loving God will refuse to let sin go unpunished. When we are being punished or disciplined with the evils of this world, rather than say God is unloving, we should communicate with Him in the Word and prayer that we might have a better understanding of what is happening.
The chapter ends with an awkward transition by Jesus to "rise and leave" despite people staying where they are. Most likely, this is to highlight the new topic of discussion forming the core of the second half of John's gospel: the love of Christ laying down his life.
