Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced earlier this May that the company would begin construction on a lithium refinery in Texas that would become the biggest producer of the material in North America by 2025, producing enough battery metal to assemble around 1 million electric cars (EVs). However, he said the company will continue to produce the Tesla Semi in small quantities through the end of 2024. Musk explained on Tuesday that there is still a bottleneck in the battery supply, which is the reason for the delay. But, how is Tesla going to resolve this? The 4680 battery cell program, which is anticipated to be crucial for Tesla's upcoming electric vehicles, has received a fairly detailed update from the company.
Tesla's own cell strategy was introduced at Battery Day in 2020, and since then, the 4680 battery cell type has completely revolutionized the industry.
With the new design, the manufacturer predicted that battery costs could be reduced by more than 50%. Since then, however, it has encountered certain production bottlenecks and has been unable to scale up production.

The 4680 cell, according to Tesla's senior vice president of engineering, Drew Baglino:
“On Battery Day, we established a cost-down roadmap through 2026 across five areas of effort.”
"We talked about the design of the cell, the anode and cathode materials, the idea of the structural pack, and the actual cell manufacturing. Since that time, we have advanced in each of these areas. When completely ramped up according to what we indicated on Battery Day, the Cell Factory, or Texas 4680 factory, which we are in the process of developing, commissioning, installing, and running, will have a capex per gigawatt hour that is 70% cheaper than normal cell factories. Likewise in future factory buildouts like the one in Nevada, we will continue to investigate densification and investment reduction options.”
The "cell factory" Baglino is referring to is the Gigafactory Texas. Tesla is now producing 4680 cells at its pilot plant in Fremont, but it is anticipated to attain higher scale production there.
He went on:
Regarding the cell design, we are currently manufacturing not just the first generation tabless cell that we revealed on Battery Day but also a second, more readily manufactured variant in Texas. within the cathode substance. According to the Battery Day schedule, we are engaged in a number of activities. Our Corpus Christi Lithium Refinery will start operations in May.
