Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland is a German patriotic song by Ernst Moritz Arndt (1813) which was popular in the 19th century. In the text, Arndt asks the German question and answers it by demanding a Greater German nation-state comprising all German-speaking areas in Europe. The song was performed for the first time in Berlin in 1814. As the original tune did not become popular, Gustav Reichardt wrote a new melody in 1825. This new tune made the song very popular among the German population that desired the transformation of the German Confederation into a united empire, instead of the previous situation where there were multiple duchies. Joachim Raff used Reichhardt's tune as a leitmotif in his symphony An das Vaterland.

«Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?» («Что такое немецкое Отечество?») - немецкая патриотическая песня XIX-ого века, слова: Эрнст Мориц Арндт, музыка: Густав Рейхардт. В тексте Арндт задает германский вопрос и отвечает на него, требуя создания немецкого национального государства, охватывающего все германоязычные территории Европы . Песня была впервые исполнена в Берлине в 1814 году. Поскольку оригинальная мелодия не стала популярной, Густав Рейхардт написал новую мелодию в 1825 году. Эта новая мелодия сделала песню очень популярной среди немецкого населения, желавшего превратить Германскую конфедерацию в объединенную империю вместо предыдущей.

Des Deutschen Vaterland ist ein politisches Lied, das Ernst Moritz Arndt 1813 vor der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig verfasste. Arndt schrieb das zugrundeliegende Gedicht Anfang 1813 in Königsberg, als er im Auftrag des Freiherrn vom Stein für eine Erhebung der Ostpreußen gegen Napoleon agitierte (siehe Ostpreußische Landwehr 1813). Unmittelbar darauf wurde das Gedicht in Flugblättern und an unterschiedlichen Druckorten weit verbreitet. Arndt und vom Stein waren mit der russischen Armee im Januar 1813 aus St. Petersburg nach Königsberg gekommen, die von dort aus weiter nach Westen zog und im März 1813 in Berlin ankam, während die bestehende Zensur gegen politische Schriften weitgehend gelockert wurde. Anlässlich des Sieges über Napoleon und des Einmarsches von Blüchers Truppen in Paris wurde das Lied 1814 erstmals in Berlin aufgeführt.
