The Bard. Noted playwright Will Wagadagger is to put on a play for Queen Elizabeth in return for a heap of treasure that inevitably includes the final silver spoon. If only he had some actors! T-Shirt, having had his magic taken away from him, is first to give it a go, and soon teams up with Sally in more ways than one. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 28th February, 1989.
We seem to be using the same set as last week, just in a different time period. There are plenty of great one-liners and Shakespearean references (I'm sure I missed a load, too), and the ending takes you by surprise as it seems to drift from the accepted formula. The idea of the queen having a Walkman is as daft as T-Shirt in a dress and the consistent mistaking of Sally for a boy, while the fourth wall is broken more than in the rest of the series put together - but always to good effect. Comparisons will naturally be made to Blackadder the Second, but they never went as far as to treat us to an Elizabethan Boogie, did they? Gloriously silly stuff.
The cast list reaches stellar proportions in this one with Frank Thornton and Denise Coffey filling the guest roles. Not many children's shows can boast that level of class! Denise, of course, would ultimately prove to be a friend of the series, plus also notched up appearances in Spatz and The Tomorrow People (from the same writers). She has credits going back to 1959, but really made her name on Do Not Adjust Your Set in the late 60s. Frank, making his second T-Bag appearance, is sadly no longer with us, but will forever be recognised as Captain Peacock in Are You Being Served? (and latterly Grace and Favour). His IMDB reaches back to 1950 and includes proper stuff, too, but seriously: Steptoe and Son, Tommy Cooper, The Goodies, Dick Emery, Sooty, Kenny Everett and Last of the Summer Wine. What a legacy! On a sidenote, Frank also showed up in an episode of The Upper Hand, which of course co-starred our very own Kellie Bright.
One final note: I'm probably being dreadfully slow here, but it took me a while to get the "Wagadagger" joke. Wag a dagger. Wag = shake. Dagger = spear. Wag a dagger = Shake (a) spear. Obviously, I knew who the character was based on, but embarrassingly enough, the pun simply didn't register to begin with.
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
