You’ve probably heard about the genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994. But did you know that this gruesome event heavily influences the lives of people in Rwanda to this day? Thousands and thousands of widows live on the brink of poverty, struggling to re-establish their lives after all the horrific events they were forced to witness.
Comforting the widows and orphans this genocide left behind was the initial vision that led Jean Gakwandi to establish an organisation called ‘Solace Ministries’. It is based on the call “Comfort, comfort my people.” (Isaiah 40:1). The charity was also registered in the UK as ‘Solace Ministries UK’ by Dr. Aderemi Banjoko.
Their approach to meeting the needs of widows and orphans include:
• Providing counseling for trauma healing
• Providing formal and informal education for orphans and needy children
• Providing shelter for the homeless
• Fighting loneliness with a community as an alternative family
• Providing medical assistance for the sick and establishing a medical clinic
