The unidentified man reportedly carved the inscription ‘Ivan + Hayley 23’ into the ancient venue’s stone facade with a key. Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano issued a statement on June 26 labeling the action ‘very serious, unworthy, and a sign of great incivility’.
‘I hope that whoever did this ... will be identified and punished according to our laws,’ he added. According to Italian news agency ANSA, the act could carry a prison sentence of up to 5 years and a €15,000 (approx $16,400) fine.
