Ashmolean Museum Clara Peeters was a pioneer of still-life paintings and is thought to have been one of the first professional women artists in early modern Europe. This beautiful film by award winning animator Yu Sun @yusunnnnnn responds to and celebrates the work of this inspiring artist.
Often in Clara’s work you’ll find her name engraved in objects that you can see in her paintings. The silver knife that you can see in the foreground of this painting contains her signature and is perhaps her own knife, possibly a wedding present, as it appears in several of her paintings. Clara is also considered to be the first known artist to include self-portraits in still-life paintings.
