Most of Kherson remains flooded, as waters begin to subside

Most of Kherson remained inundated on Monday (June 12) although floodwaters had begun to subside following the destruction of southern Ukraine's Kakhovka dam.

Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, a senior official in Ukraine's Kherson military administration, said water levels in the Kherson region had dropped to slightly above 3 meters from Thursday's (June 8) peak of 5.6-meter average.

Drone video filmed on Sunday (June 11) showed extensive areas of the city of Kherson and the surrounding area still submerged in water.

The Kakhovka reservoir has lost nearly three-quarters of its water since the dam was destroyed.

The dam's breach unleashed floods that submerged some 600 square kilometers of land on both banks of the Dnipro River, prompting a mass evacuation of residents.

Those returning to their homes after floodwaters subside will face shortages of drinking water, potential water and airborne diseases, as well as new danger in the form of landmines dislodged from battlefields near the river.

Such mines can be transported by the surging water, subsequently appearing in previously flooded areas.
