Wolfgang Sawallisch was (as the slender notes to this edition suggest) born to conduct opera. He could do much more than we find in this 331-CD set (mostly Mozart, Wagner and Strauss, with a little Orff, Weber and some other tidbits tossed in), but from a conductor's standpoint he hardly puts a foot wrong anywhere. The singing is another matter, of course, one that comes down to personal choice.
