On October 14, 1961, to demonstrate the reliability of NORAD, America and Canada organized an enormous air defense exercise, which was to be completely realistic, and the bomber command was asked to contribute. Eight Avro Vulcan bombers from the British Royal Air Force participated in Sky Shield II, four from the 27th Squadron in Bermuda, and four from the 83rd Squadron in Scotland. They simulated Russian heavy bombers flying at a height of 56,000 feet, higher than USAF B-52 bombers at 42,000 feet, and B-47 Stratojets at a lesser altitude. With help from the other three Vulcans that were jamming the F-102 Delta Dagger interceptors, a Vulcan from the 27th Squadron was able to penetrate the air defenses, before landing at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in New York. Four interceptors were said to have made one radar touch with the northern force attacking in a flow, and all four landed in Newfoundland. Nearly 50% of enemy flights at low altitude had managed to avoid detection, and of those that had, 40% then managed to avoid detection by altering the size, shape, or altitude of their formation.
