The Good Samaritan is a parable told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. It shows how we should love our neighbors as ourselves by helping others in times of suffering. The story is about a Jewish traveler who is beaten and robbed on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest and a Levite see him but avoid him. A Samaritan, who is hated by Jews, comes by and takes pity on him. He bandages his wounds, puts him on his donkey, and takes him to an inn. Jesus instructs us to be like the Good Samaritan, not the Priest and Levite.
The parable of the good Samaritan is ultimately about Jesus. And, when we make famous Bible stories like this out to be about us, we are losing what makes them so great.
The parable of the Good Samaritan is biblical but the term Good Samaritan is familiar in everyday conversation. Everyone knows that the good guy helps the guy (or animal) in need.
The parable of the Good Samaritan is a story to illustrate how we “love our neighbors as ourselves.”
