Like many other aircraft with comparably brief service, the F-117's removal from service is being motivated by both intrinsic design flaws and the emergence of new weapons systems created to replace the Nighthawks. The F-117's stealth design prioritized a reduced RCS over aerodynamics from the beginning. The aircraft's RCS is less than a square foot, yet the exchange made it problematic in terms of aerodynamics. Its numerous fly-by-wire flight systems must make nearly constant flight corrections for it to stay in control. There were also technological restrictions. Because it reduces emissions and improves stealth, the F-117A does not have radar. In addition, the aircraft lacks an afterburner, and bomb bay can only hold two 2,000-pound bombs. Its long-term usefulness would be ruined by these restrictions. The F-22 Raptor, a brand-new fighter jet, was secretly tested by the USAF in the late 1990s. The Raptor was a real air dominance fighter with the ability to carry air-to-air missiles, a cannon, and air-to-ground bombs. The F-22s took the place of the Nighthawks by 2008.
