Ildikó Szabó was born in Hungary. The cellist has won prizes at 16 competitions throughout Europe. She has performed with Concerto Budapest, the Hungarian Radio Orchestra, the Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Since 2018 she has been studying in Weimar in the class of Prof. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. She has been teaching chamber music at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar since October 2023.
Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2 in G minor op. 126 is a striking work from the late phase of his oeuvre. Contrary to traditional forms, the work begins with a slow, mournful first movement, while the second, fast-paced movement leads directly into the third movement with a horn fanfare. Ostinate rhythms and semitonally progressing melodies draw the audience into a dark, captivating world of sound. In contrast to the first cello concerto, which is one of the most popular instrumental concertos of the 20th century, the second cello concerto is rarely performed. This is not least due to some of the subtleties that the piece has to offer.
The university orchestra is one of the most excellent ensembles in its category in Germany. In its tradition as Germany's first orchestral school, the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar has always paid particular attention to its most important young ensemble. For students of orchestral instruments, these practical musical experiences are an integral and indispensable part of their studies and also serve as preparation for their future careers.
