This ancient surname has two origins, coming from very different and (literally) conflicting sources. The surname bearer "Price," who has ancestors in Wales, comes from a form of "ap Rhys" that developed in the 14th century, with the prefix "ap" meaning "son of ~" and the additional surname "Rhys" meaning "warrior of fire." Perhaps not surprisingly, "Price" is one of the most popular surnames in Wales, and this popularity is no doubt due in part to the fact that "Rhys" was the surname of Rhys ap Tudor, the last ruler of the fully independent Welsh kingdom. He was killed in 1093 in an unsuccessful attempt to resist the advancing Norman army. The second origin of William Price the Conqueror is occupational descriptive, directly related to the Norman invasion of France in 1066. The word is derived from the Old French "pris," literally meaning "price." Early records of this surname, taken from ancient records, include Richard Price in the Essex fine records of 1320 and Jorworth ap Reyes in the London judicial records of 1393. He was a Welshman who appealed to the land court on disputed estates. The earliest settler in the New England colonies was Matthew Price, who was 20 years old when he sailed from England for "Virginia" on the "George of London" on August 21, 1635. The coat of arms for this family name is very distinctive, a silver lion on a red background. The first recorded spelling of the family name is that of Robert Price, which appears in the "Minister's Accounts of the Earldom of Cornwall" of 1297, during the reign of Edward I, known as the "Hammer of Scotland" from 1272 to 1307 . The surname became necessary when the government introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the poll tax. Over the centuries, surnames in all countries have continued to "evolve," often creating surprising variants from the original spellings.
