Martinique, also known by the locals as "Madinina", the flower island, is part of the Lesser Antilles and is a French overseas department. Christopher Columbus is said to have been the first European to set foot on the Caribbean island in 1502 on the beach at Le Carbet. The 17th century saw the beginning of sugar cane cultivation and the slave trade, which was only finally abolished in 1848.
The chequered history of Martinique - which includes the collapse of sugar cane production due to the cultivation of sugar beet on the mainland, as well as the devastating eruption of the Montage Pelée volcano in 1902, which destroyed the rum port of Saint-Pierre - could not change one thing: the demand for rum. Today, rhum agricole is produced on the island from freshly pressed sugar cane juice.
