16 Dec: Russian missiles blindly hit Bakhmut and Kiev | Ukraine War
Defensive lines built by Russia recently follow traditional military plans for entrenchment, "largely unchanged since the Second World War," the U.K. ministry said in its daily intelligence update on the war in Ukraine. Russian assault groups are also advancing towards the northeast of Bakhmut, claiming that the Ukrainian armed forces command has carried out "urgent rotation of personnel to maintain combat capability". Russian troops are advancing on several streets in the southeastern and eastern parts of Bakhmut, Russian sources continue to emphasize heavy Ukrainian casualties and claim that Ukrainian troops have rotated or completely withdrawn from parts of Bakhmut." The battle for Bakhmut accelerated after Russian troops withdrew from the city of Kherson last month. The capture of the area would give the Russian army a morale boost after a series of military defeats elsewhere in Ukraine.
