Founded in 1772 by George Buchanan, Littlemill is the oldest, licenced distillery in Scotland.
The distillery changed hands many times over the years, including the world’s first female distillery licensee. After a brief time in mothballs between 1984 and 1989, the distillery ran until 1992 when what had been Barton’s Scottish arm, now Gibson International, went bankrupt.
Its new owner contemplated running Littlemill as a museum, however in 1994 it was closed and soon after it had been sold to a developer in 2004, it caught on fire.
Fortunately, the final remaining casks (along with the stills) had been transferred to the Loch Lomond Distillery before the fire!
During its life, Littlemill produced whisky in the traditional Lowland style, triple distilling its spirit, while also experimenting with double distillation and both peated and non-peated expressions.
These days, Master Blender Michael Henry selects the finest liquids to release expressions however only a few hundred bottles at a time because he has limited casks left.
The amount of Littlemill casks is now finite, so it will be only the lucky few who will be able to taste the final legacy of Scotland’s oldest distillery.
Spiritfilled were fortunate enough to find one of these elusive casks, a 30-year-old thing of beauty, a new beast in our Mythical Beasts range.
