The distance covered by light in one year is called one light-year. We know that the velocity of light in vacuum is 300000000 m/s and there are 31536000 seconds in a year and distance is equal to velocity * time, then in one light-year, it becomes 9.46*10¹⁵ m. Whereas one astronomical unit is the average distance between the centre of the Earth and the Sun, which is about 1.5*10¹¹m. When we talk about the distance between stars, we do not use the astronomical unit, we use the light-year because the astronomical unit is much less than the light year. Like there are 6.3*10⁴ astronomical units in one light-year. For example, the closest star to the Sun is Proxima Centauri, which is about 4.25 ly or 268770 AU away. From these numbers, we can see that the astronomical unit is not convenient to use for measuring large distances
