Retroposition is a cellular molecular process in which transcribed and spliced mature mRNAs become reverse-transcribed from retroposed parental source genes into DNA retroposon fragments and randomly inserted and integrated into new chromosome positions forming a functional retrogene. The retrotransposons function in gene regulation and structural change resulting in expansion and diversification of gene families in the evolutionary context.
