After two months of arduous, slow progress, Ukrainian forces have increased their counteroffensive, trying to mount a new boost in the south of the nation while getting nearer to the bitterly fought eastern city of Bakhmut.
The Ukrainian army had now launched the main part of its counteroffensive, sending thousands of reinforcements who had received western training and equipment into what it believed to be a vulnerability in Russian defensive lines in the Zaporizhzhia area.
According to the Washington Post, a US official cautioned against concluding that the primary counteroffensive has started.
Military observers are spotting preparations being made for the entry of more forces into the conflict in the Zaporizhzhia region. But it's unclear what those actions might be intended to achieve.
The head of the Russian defence ministry's press office, Igor, earlier on Wednesday characterised a major assault and ferocious fights south of the settlement of Orikhiv but claimed the strike had been repelled.
The Ukrainian forces had gained entry in three locations, according to the Russian military columnist Rybar, who explained an attack by more than 80 armoured personnel carriers, such as tanks, ground forces combat vehicles, armoured vehicles, and combat vehicles.
The heavily guarded cities of Tokmak and Melitopol, which are further away from the coast, are the major Ukrainian objectives. Robotyne, a village held by Russia, was one of the battles' immediate focal points on Thursday.
The liberation of Melitopol would divide in half the Russian troops on the southern side and isolate the occupied Crimea.
After weeks of bombarding Russian ammunition depots and logistical hubs behind the frontlines and wearing down Russian defensive lines in Zaporizhzhia, Ukrainian commanders reportedly tried to take advantage of an opening.
At the same time, Ukrainian armies have continued their offensive in and around Bakhmut, a devastated Donetsk town where just over three months ago Moscow declared victory after a bloody and protracted battle.
In recent days, it was reported that Ukrainian forces had captured the town of Andriivka and were advancing four miles to the south, all around the village of Klishchiivka, taking over significant high ground and nearby forests.
In an effort to put the Russian forces inside Bakhmut under threat, Ukraine is trying a partial encirclement of the city.
A high ranking Ukrainian official claimed that every weapon system available, including recently delivered US cluster munitions, had been employed in the battles.
The Research Centre for the Study of War deemed the purported Ukrainian victories to be strategic and tactically important, and some Russian combat bloggers seemed to ratify Ukraine's advancement.
If the advance is confirmed, Ukraine's forces will be closer to the crucial T-53 highway, which continues to run through the city.
