Joseph Parry’s (1841-1903) ABERYSTWYTH hymn tune (1876) is perhaps most familiarly used with Charles Wesley’s (1707-1788) moving text, ‘Jesu, Lover of my soul’, first published in 1740. The hymn, addressed as a plea to Jesus himself—the “Lover of my soul”—beseeches the Lord to give refuge “while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high”, and to pour out grace and aid in the “storm of life”. A fitting reflection for the season of Lent, when we come to a greater awareness of our sinfulness, discipline our bodies and minds, and look forward more than before to the promise of the resurrection.
