Sweet potatoes, for example, have the advantage that, unlike normal potatoes, their skin does not contain any toxic glycoalkaloids. However, if the peel is to be eaten, it is important to ensure that it is organic when buying it, so that there are no residues of pesticides.
Compared to the normal potato, the sweet potato also has the advantage that it contains more beta-carotene, which is also responsible for the often orange-colored flesh. Beta-carotene is what is known as an antioxidant that protects cells in the body from damage and reduces the risk of many diseases, including cancer.
A systematic review published in the English-language journal "Trends in Food Science & Technology" came to the conclusion that sweet potatoes have an anti-cancer effect.
Fight diabetes with caiapo made from sweet potatoes
Another particularly healthy ingredient in sweet potatoes is the so-called Caiapo, which is mainly found in the skin.
Caiapo lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the journal Diabetes Care, and was linked to better overall health in participants.
Sweet potatoes can contain a lot of oxalic acid
When consuming sweet potatoes, however, it should be noted that sweet potatoes contain dangerous oxalic acid, with the content being heavily dependent on the variety. According to the Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE), certain groups of people should only consume foods with oxalic acid in small amounts.
For example, people with kidney disease or problems with kidney stones should avoid foods high in oxalic acid.
