"aVoid" - A short film made by Kozaks during After-School Activities

13 YO’s Rita and Angie, and Sec III’s Jakub, Liza, and Masha created this unique and excitingly original piece of film art that somewhat defies description. Equal parts surreal, ethereal, evocative, and meaningful, it’s also quite ambitious.

Using a combination of sparse staging, mask work, and light & fog, the production team wrote, shot, edited, and released a film that features a single character dealing with an existential crisis. It takes place in a kind of nowhere netherworld that subtly references Plato’s Parable of the Cave.

During preproduction, all of the students pitched a ‘workable’ idea for a short that could be shot using locations available during activity time. Masha first originated the idea they eventually used, one that makes good use of the most film-friendly location on campus, the auditorium. The students, working on her basic premise with Mr. & Mrs. Hume and Ms. Denney, fleshed out her rough outline, then lined, storyboarded, and shot-listed a full version of the script.

During production, each student - when not taking turns directing several scenes - alternated between operating a camera, slating shots, and running the light board. Although everyone dialed in and dealt with the intensity of production, the team was unable to complete the work in the time they had originally planned, and a weekend work session was needed to ensure that got they shots they actually got were as evocative and effective as the ones they had originally planned.

During that weekend session, a series of long air alerts necessitated extensive cuts to the script that were made on-the-fly.

With most of an extra day done, principal photography wrapped on schedule, leaving them a tight two-week window to edit the film. This too proved too ambitious, and Mr. Hume finished the edit after the Winter Break. While trimming the shots into scenes, he was also happy to have originally music written, arranged, and recorded by Angie. Adding that to the sound mix really brought the film to life, and gave it an emotional punch it would never have achieved otherwise.

While all of the students involved stepped up and over-delivered, Masha’s work on the film deserves special mention and attention. The initial idea she brought to the group became an expansive and expressive mini-opera of light, fog, movement, and emotion. Seeing the film for the first time was, for her, a moving experience, and, even more than her raw, evocative performance, it was sharing the personal authenticity of that idea that she found left her feeling most vulnerable.

Everyone involved hopes you enjoy the film. It was a ton of work, and required extraordinary commitment, creativity, and effort. But it was also a ton of fun to be a part of.
