I AM the True Vine (Jn 15:1-3; John study 112)

Jesus declares he is the true Vine using the emphatic "I AM" signaling that this is characteristic of his divinity. Jesus is the God who gives us life and salvation by joining us to him in faith. Agricultural metaphors are common in the Bible but there is some uniqueness in this text. Christ is the Vine, rather than the world or Israel being the vineyard. The Father is the Vinedresser who both cleanses/prunes those who are fruitful and takes away from the Vine those who seek sin. The fruit is not exactly our works but those who come to faith to be claimed by the Father in the harvest at the end of the age. The implication of this is that if we are not trying to spread the word of Christ so others may live in Christ like we do, then we are cutting ourselves off from Christ and his salvation.
