The upcoming BRICS summit in August is shaping up to be one for the books. South Africa, as this year's BRICS chair, has been busy working on preparations and on the key agenda of expanding membership. The South African ambassador to the BRICS, Anil Sooklal, said more than 40 countries, including all the major developing Global South countries, have expressed interest in becoming BRICS members, and 22 countries have formally asked to join. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has also invited the heads of all African countries to the upcoming BRICS Summit in Johannesburg to engage in dialogue with BRICS leaders. Besides looking to welcome more members, what's at stake in this year's summit?
