It is one of the most famous and noble names in English history since the Norman introduction of the conquest in 1066. It derives from the Old French "Rous" (red, a nickname for a red-haired person) and "-el" (small). There are over 60 Russell entries in national biographies, the Dukes of Bedford were Russells, Charles Russell 1832-1900, and the Chief Justice of England was Baron Russell of Killowen. The 3rd Earl Russell, better known as the philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), left London on January 2, 1634, at the age of 19, aboard the "Bonaventure" (Bonaventure) for the "Virginia" (Virginia), the first of the "Bonaventure's" (Bonaventure) three months before the ship was due to leave London. There are seven spelling variations in modern language: Russel, Russell, Russill, Rousel(l), and Roussel(l). One of the oldest of these is the coat of arms of the Russell family of Shropshire, a black shield with a fess between six gold martlets. The martlets signify those who make their living on the wings of virtue and merit, with little land to rest on. The first recorded surname is that of Robert Roussel, known as "The Administrator," from the reign of Henry I, 1100-1135, "Winton Rolls of Hampshire," 1115. It was not until the government introduced personal taxation that surnames became necessary. In England this was known as the poll tax. Over the centuries, surnames in all countries continued to "evolve," often creating surprising variants from the original spellings.
