On July 3rd, 1988, an Iranian F-14 Tomcat was brought down by the USS Vincennes, a US Navy guided-missile cruiser. However, it was soon revealed that it was an Iranian Airbus A-300 airliner with 299 passengers on board. The cruiser mistook the passenger airliner for a military fighter in an attack run, as reported by the U.S. government and the crew members of the Vincennes. However, you must keep in mind that the aircraft's flight plan was logged by the cruiser's Aegis Combat System at the time of the event as rising, rather than falling as in an attack run. Following the 1987 USS Stark incident, all nearby aircraft were required to listen to an international air-distress radio frequency. After being struck, Flight 655 crashed into the sea with no survivors.
