Japanese troops have stormed an island beach at the edge of the East China Sea in a simulated attack to drive potential invaders out of its territory. The November 19, 2023, drill on Tokunoshima island capped an 11-day series of exercises meant to show the defence readiness of Japanese ground, sea and air forces. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has pledged to double defence spending over the next five years, amid escalating tensions with neighbours China, Russia and North Korea.
