Not only does Miami have a lot of great marine animals, it has a lot of great marine plants as well! Meet the cactus algae - a type of green algae that’s found on shallow seagrass beds and sand flats.
It grows as chains of calcareous segments and turns white when bleached. Here it’s shown in a canal in North Miami.
**Fun Fact** Pulverized cactus algae creates a lot of the coarse white sand in the area.
