Explaining the history behind Juneteenth as celebrations kickoff

KCRA News Juneteenth celebrations are happening all across northern California and it's important to know the history behind the holiday. Juneteenth is short for June 19th, the day slaves in Galveston, Texas learned they were free in 1865, two and a half years after the emancipation proclamation was signed. "That following year the African American community in Texas started celebrating something called Jubilee Day," said Darryl Freeman, a retired professor at Sacramento State. Freeman says during the first Juneteenth celebrations the African American communities dressed up and came together much like today. "They were dressed in Sunday finery, there were actually parade wagons, musicians, etc.," Freeman said. In 2021 President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
