Project Description:
Located on the northern shore of Dove Lake in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the new Dove Lake Viewing Shelter draws on the tones, textures, and history of its immediate context to become a part of this unique natural and cultural landscape. Its design balances the primary function of a shelter, a haven for visitors to a remote region notorious for ever-changing weather, with that of an experience — a reflective space that gives pause, one that curates an uninterrupted connection with the surrounding environment. The scored concrete exterior creates a rhythmic pattern echoing the geological processes that formed the surrounding valley. The minimally-lit interiors draw visitors through the space via unadorned corridors and strategically-placed windows. Built within a former car park, the shelter was commissioned by the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service to provide an accessible visitor experience to one of the state’s most valued wilderness destinations.
