John 4:1-30
Shame: A painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior. Shame and honor were important cultural marks in the ancient world – and even in some cultures today. Christianity has a lot to say about sin and guilt; it’s a message that can be applied with brutality if we neglect the proper application of the gospel. Many people struggle with the sense of isolation, loneliness, and guilt that comes from the humiliation and distress of shamefulness. Jesus confronts us in our guilt, but he doesn’t leave us with feelings of shame, instead he offers us cleansing, righteousness, and forgiveness. We can leave shame behind because Jesus took our shame on himself and gave us peace and honor in its place.
