On March 21, 1984, the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 was participating in an exercise with South Korean forces in the Sea of Japan along with eight escorting warships. The carrier strike group was to be followed by the Victor-class nuclear submarine K-314, which the USS Kitty Hawk quickly realized was happening. After a week of this cat and mouse game, on March 21, the K-314 lost track of the USS Kitty Hawk owing to severe weather and ascended to a depth of just 10 meters. The whole Kitty Hawk CSG was only a couple of miles away, and Captain Vladimir Evseenko noticed that they were both speeding in the same direction. Evseenko immediately ordered submersion, but it was already too late! The USS Kitty Hawk and the K-314 collided with each other. Although everything appeared to be in order, their initial assumption was that the conning tower had been destroyed. The only thing that was seriously damaged in the collision was the propeller. Instead, the USS Kitty Hawk had a massive hole in its bow that allowed thousands of tons of jet fuel to pour into the sea. Tow vessels transported the K-314 to the closest Soviet naval base.
