The Indian D2C market grew rapidly from 2020-2022, driven by product discovery, pandemic-induced doorstep delivery demand, and direct brand interactions. Projected to exceed $100 billion by 2025, this growth led many D2C brands, including The Souled Store, to prioritize rapid expansion over profitability.
The Souled Store, founded by Vedang Patel and partners, initially succeeded with a data-driven approach, staying profitable for six years. However, in pursuit of aggressive growth, they adopted an omnichannel strategy, offered high discounts, and ramped up marketing and hiring, leading to significant cash burn and a net loss of INR 26.72 Cr in FY22.
Realizing their error, the founders restructured operations, achieving an annual revenue run rate of INR 400 Cr in GMV for the current year and a 2% positive EBITDA margin. They aim for a 15% margin in FY24. Despite the funding challenges, they raised INR 135 Cr, emphasizing sustainable growth and core business values over unchecked expansion.
