Anastasia. A young travelling girl lives with someone she knows isn't her father, but holds no knowledge of her actual family. The only clue she has is the object she was clutching at the time she was found: a silver spoon. Coupled with the fact that she bears an uncanny resemblance to Sally, she soon finds herself wrapped up in one of T-Bag's plots. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 14th February, 1989.
Though the title of the episode is Anastasia and there's some crossover with the story of the tragic daughter of the last Russian Tsar, by far the biggest influence on this one is the opera The Bohemian Girl (which makes it especially inconsiderate of them to name the next episode in the series La Boheme, confusing me no end). I say "opera", but let's be frank: my only knowledge of the tale is the Laurel and Hardy film, and I doubt I'm alone in that. But you don't need me to tell you that it's adapted superbly to the T-Bag universe with some very big laughs along the way.
Technically, Sally's only in it for about six seconds of the first half of the episode. But given the dual-role (which wasn't credited, incidentally), Kellie Bright gets the opportunity not only to sing but also to dress up. By all accounts, many of the young actresses on the show used to feel a little left out by the fact that their outfit generally stayed the same throughout the series, while everyone else got to try on outlandish costumes - but at least that's partly put right here.
Favourite bits? The life story section, with an exasperated T-Bag bored out of her brains but still not able to put two and two together and figure out what's going on. Also, wrong as it may be, the fact that Tallulah should think nothing of taking such scandalously cheap shots at a child's looks is something I will never fail to find funny. You probably wouldn't get away with that nowadays - nor all the knife-throwing, for that matter. (I hate to spoil the magic, but they actually come out from behind.)
The guest stars in this one are Jack Klaff and Christopher Strauli. Jack, who plays Rudolpho, is probably most famous for being Apostis in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only , but was also in the original Star Wars, appeared regularly in Vanity Fair as Rawdon Crawley, played Abraham Lincoln in Red Dwarf, and (according to Wikipedia) has held four visiting professorships at Princeton University. Christopher, meanwhile, was Norman Binns in Only When I Laugh, took the lead in Full House, and cropped up in a number of Victoria Wood sketches.
There's a little Children's ITV continuity at the beginning of this video, presented by Mark Granger and Scally.
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
