British Movietone On this day in 1940, the Dunkirk evacuation began, and "Operation Dynamo" was launched for the evacuation of British, French, and Belgian soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk in northern France. Here is a British Movietone report showing soldiers returning to England.
Lord Gort arrives back in London signalling that the evacuation of the BEF from Flanders is nearly completed. The epic withdrawal was carried out courageously by the many small vessels bringing British and French troops from the beaches.
Planes fly over Dunkirk and everywhere fires rage. Bombs burst and wreckage is everywhere apparent. Ships are wrecked in the harbour and a British destroyer passes a transport at high speed. The Epic Of Dunkirk CU Lord Gort and other officers leave No 10 Downing Street. Troops boarding ships. French troops alongside, they give 'thumbs up' sign. WVS feeding troops. Troops on deck-chairs on beach, some eating and some sleeping. Mass shots of some of the craft that took part in the evacuation. Scenes of Dunkirk under bombardment. Famous shot of men knee deep in water wading out to ships at low tide. GV Wide angle of thousands of troops moving towards ship. Several shots of German planes in action attacking the evacuees and Dunkirk. Various shots of ships with decks full of men returning to England. Lord Gort Returns - Two shots of Lord Gort. He then leaves No 10 with General Sir John Dill and Anthony Eden. Also scenes of a cabinet meeting. Alexander and Attlee talking to Duff Cooper. Evacuation Of Dunkirk - SEE STORY NUMBER 39159/2 FOR CUTS Various shots of the convoy which includes a channel steamer. As the craft nears the shore the soldiers wade out from the beach. In the background the town blazes furiously.
