In the Footsteps of Kit Bag. (Or, Aztec.) T-Bag and T-Shirt are on a mission to find the legendary Sunstones of Montezuma - their explorer forebears searched for them many years ago, and now is the time to get their own hands on them and harness their power. Thing is, Diggory Hunt and his daughter Penny are also on the trail. Who will get there first?
This is the first episode of the eighth and penultimate series of the show - originally broadcast on Monday, 6th January, 1992 - and it's the last series to feature the stop-the-girl-on-the-quest formula. That said, I think it's fair to say that at this point T-Bag and T-Shirt were already more proactive than ever, going all-out in their search for the stones rather than waiting for Penny to do all the hard work before attempting to scupper things later on, as previously.
The primary thing everyone will notice is that the classic theme tune used from day one has changed. I'm not sure why that is, but it's noticeable that no-one is credited at the end with any sort of musical role - perhaps by this point the writing was already on the wall for Thames, so library pieces only were used throughout instead. (Pure speculation.) In seeming contradiction to that, the sets are far grander than I'd remembered, and really are something to behold, while never feeling like too much of a departure from the cardboard cut-out years that we all fell in love with. Look at that temple! Other things that you can't fail to spot are the new flying T-Room spaceship thing, and T-Shirt getting stroppier and ever more concerned about his social life. A major omission is the old curiosity shop which was where each series traditionally started and finished - here, we're straight into the story, with no suggestion of crossing into another universe or anything like that. This also means that T-Shirt is subject to T-Bag from the start without any explanation whatsoever, when previously he was captured from the real world and put under her power. Perhaps that changes the relationships between the characters, one way or another.
But the jokes? Well up to the usual standard, in my humble opinion, despite the fact that there was apparently a bit of a rush on to get two whole series finished for broadcast in 1992. The "My life in in ruins" line and all the shenanigans regarding the stolen map struck me as particularly well-crafted. Brilliant stuff, especially considering this is the set-up episode.
Oh, and keep an eye out for some Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end, presented by Glenn Kinsey. He was standing in for Tommy Boyd at the time.
Grateful thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
