This interesting name derives from the Old French personal name Hu(gh)e, introduced by the Normans after 1066. For example, it is a popular name among the Normans in England, partly due to the fame of St. Hugh of Lincoln (1140-1200), who was born in Burgundy and founded the first Carthusian and Scottish monasteries in England. In Ireland and Scotland it became known as "Aodh" or "Eoghann." In Wales and other Celtic areas, it derives from the Old Celtic word Hu or Huw, meaning "fire" or "inspiration." Early records of this surname include Anne, daughter of Maurice Hughes, baptized at St. James, Clerkenwell, London, on October 9, 1586; Stephen Hughes, who married Catelyn Daniel at Swansea, Glamorgan, on October 12, 1670, June 14, 1687 and Dorothy, daughter of Thomas Hughes, baptized at St. Thomas, Swansea, Glamorgan, on 14 June 1687. The first surname on record is that of Thomas Hughes, of Pipe Rolls of Somerset in 1327, during the reign of Edward 111, "Father of the Navy" (1327-1377). Surnames became necessary only after the government introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the poll tax. Over the centuries, surnames in all countries continued to "evolve," often creating surprising variants from the original spellings.
